— Paton edition

L'edera a quattro corimbi, di prati purpurei corolle
ti fioriscano attorno, Anacreonte,
seppure i morti alcuna gioia tocca.

Libation (spondē) was an important part the ancient Greek religion, and more specifically, of the funerary rituals. Libation consisted of pouring milk, wine, honey, water or oil to the dead.

Let the four - clustered ivy , Anacreon , flourish
around you , and the tender flowers of the purple
meadows , and let fountains of white milk bubble up ,
and sweet - smelling wine gush from the earth , so that
your ashes and bones may have joy , if indeed any
delight touches the dead .
