On a Ring

ἑπτὰ βοῶν σφραγῖδα βραχὺς λίθος εἶχεν ἴασπις,
ὡς μίαν, ὡς πάσας ἔμπνοα δερκομένας.
καὶ τάχα κἂν † ἀπέρεψε τὰ βοίδια: νῦν δὲ κέκλειται
τῇ χρυσῇ μάνδρᾳ τὸ βραχὺ βουκόλιον.

This little jasper stone has a seal of seven cows
looking like one,¹ and all looking at us as if alive.
Perhaps the cows would have run away, but now the
little herd is confined in the golden pen.
