Εὐθυμάχων ἀνδρῶν μνησώμεθα, τῶν ὅδε τύμβος,
οἳ θάνον εὔμηλον ῥυόμενοι Τεγέαν,
αἰχμηταὶ πρὸ πόληος, ἵνα σφίσι μὴ καθέληται
Ἑλλὰς ἀποφθιμένου κρατὸς ἐλευθερίαν.

Let us ever remember the men whose tomb this
is, who turned not from the battle but fell in arms
before their city, defending Tegea rich in flocks,
that Greece should never strip from their dead heads
the crown of freedom.
