Texts

ἐτράπετ᾽, οὐχ ὁσίῳ φωτὶ χαριζόμεναι;

— Paton edition

We swear by the right hand of Hades and the dark couch of Persephone whom none may name, that we are truly virgins even here under ground; but bitter Archilochus poured floods of abuse on our maidenhood, directing to no noble end but to war with women the noble language of his verse. You Muses, why to do a favour to an impious man, did you turn upon girls those scandalous iambics?
