Texts

τίς δύναται γνῶναι τὸν ἐρώμενον εἰ παρακμάζει,
πάντα συνὼν αὐτῷ μηδ᾽ ἀπολειπόμενος;
τίς δύνατ᾽ οὐκ ἀρέσαι τὴν σήμερον, ἐχθὲς ἀρέσκων;
εἰ δ᾽ ἀρέσει, τί παθὼν αὔριον οὐκ ἀρέσει;

— Paton edition

Who can tell if his beloved begins to pass his prime, if he is ever with him and never separated ? Who that pleased yesterday can fail to please today, and if lie please now, what can befall him to make him displease tomorrow ?
