δακρύει Φείδων ὁ φιλάργυρος, οὐχ ὅτι θνῄσκει,
ἀλλ᾽ ὅτι πέντε μνῶν τὴν σορὸν ἐπρίατο.
τοῦτ᾽ αὐτῷ χαρίσασθε, καί, ὡς τόπος ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ,
τῶν πολλῶν τεκνίων ἕν τι προσεμβάλετε.
Phido the miser weeps not because he is dying, but because he paid thirty pounds for his coffin. Let him off this, and as there is room in it, put one of his many little children into it besides.
