ἐνθάδε Βασιλίοιο Βασίλιον ἀρχιερῆα
θέντο με Καισαρέες, Γρηγορίοιο φίλον,
ὃν περὶ κῆρι φίλησα: θεὸς δέ οἱ ὄλβια δοίη
ἄλλα τε, καὶ ζωῆς ὡς τάχος ἀντιάσαι

ἡμετέρης: τί δ᾽ ὄνειαρ ἐπὶ χθονὶ δηθύνοντα
τήκεσθ᾽, οὐρανίης μνωόμενον φιλίης;

Here the Caesareans laid me their high-priest,
Basil the son of Basil, the friend of Gregory, whom
I loved with all my heart. May God grant him all
blessings, and especially to attain right soon to this
life that is mine. What profiteth it to linger on
earth and waste away, longing for a celestial friend-
ship ?
