δήποτε Κῦρος ἄναξ βασιλήιον ὡς ἀνέῳξεν
τύμβον ἐπὶ χρυσῷ, γράμμα τόδ᾽ εὗρε μόνον

οἴγειν ἀπλήστοιο τάφους χερός. ὣς δὲ σὺ τόσσον
σῆμα τόδ᾽ οὐχ ὁσίαις οἶξας, ἄνερ, παλάμαις.

King Cyrus once, when he opened a royal tomb
for the sake of gold, found only this inscription:
"To open tombs is the work of an insatiable hand."
So hast thou opened this great tomb with impious
hands (and in vain).
