Στράψε μέγ᾽ ἀνθρώποις Εὐφήμιος, ἀλλ᾽ ἐπὶ τυτθὸν
καὶ γὰρ καὶ στεροπῆς οὐ μακρόν ἐστι σέλας:
στράψεν ὁμοῦ σοφίῃ τε καὶ εἴδεϊ καὶ πραπίδεσσιν:
τὰ πρὶν Καππαδόκαις ἦν κλέα, νῦν δὲ γόος.

Euphemius shone bright among men, but for a
brief season ; for the flash of the lightning too is not
long. He shone alike in learning, beauty and
intellect. His qualities were once the glory and are
now the lament of Cappadocia.
