ἆ μέγα Βαττιάδαο σοφοῦ περίπυστον ὄνειαρ,
ἦ ῥ᾽ ἐτεὸν κεράων, οὐδ᾽ ἐλέφαντος ἔης.
τοῖα γὰρ ἄμμιν ἔφηνας, ἅτ᾽ οὐ πάρος ἀνέρες ἴδμεν,
ἀμφί τε ἀθανάτους, ἀμφί τε ἡμιθέους,

εὖτέ μιν ἐκ Λιβύης ἀναείρας εἰς Ἑλικῶνα
ἤγαγες ἐν μέσσαις Πιερίδεσσι φέρων
αἱ δ᾽ οἱ εἰρομένῳ ἀμφ᾽ ὠγυγίων ἡρώων
αἴτια καὶ μακάρων εἶρον ἀμειβόμεναι.

Sogno grandioso, glorioso del figlio sapiente di Batto,
tu non d'avorio, ma di corno fosti.
Cose che al mondo nessuno sapeva ci furono allora
da te, sui numi e i semidei, svelate,
quando il poeta, di Libia levandolo a volo, traesti
fra le Pierie Muse in Elicona;
alle domande di lui sugli eroi d'una volta e i beati,
gli Aitia dettando, quelle replicarono.

Ah ! great and renowned dream of the skilled son
of Battus , verily you were of horn , not of ivory ; for
you did reveal things to us touching the gods and
demigods which never man knew before , then when
catching him up you did bear him from Libya to
Helicon , and did set him down in the middle of the
Muses . And there as he wove the Origins of
primeval heroes they in turn wove for him the
Origins also of the gods .
