οὔνομα κηρύσσω Τιμοκλέος, εἰς ἅλα πικρὴν
πάντη σκεπτομένη ποῦ ποτ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἐστὶ νέκυς.
αἰαῖ: τὸν δ᾽ ἤδη φάγον ἰχθύες· ἡ δὲ περισσὴ
πέτρος ἐγὼ τὸ μάτην γράμμα τορευθὲν ἔχω.

in every direction of the salt sea, wondering where
his corpse may be. Alas ! the fishes have devoured
him before this, and I, this useless stone, bear this idle
writing carved on me.
