ὤφελε μηδ᾽ ἐγένοντο θοαὶ νέες: οὐ γὰρ ἂν ἡμεῖς
παῖδα Διοκλείδου Σώπολιν ἐστένομεν
νῦν δ᾽ ὁ μὲν εἰν ἁλί που φέρεται νέκυς: ἀντὶ δ᾽ ἐκείνου
οὔνομα καὶ κενεὸν σῆμα παρερχόμεθα.

Would that swift ships had never been, for then
we should not be lamenting Sopolis the son of
Dioclides. Now somewhere on the sea his corpse is
tossing, and what we pass by here is not himself,
but a name and an empty grave.
