Texts

— Paton edition

Two mules, equally advanced in years, adorn my
carriage, in all tilings resembling Homer’s Prayers :
lame, wrinkled, with squinting eyes, the escort of
Hephaestus, leathery demons who never tasted, I
swear it by the Sun, even in a dream, either barley
in summer or grass in spring. Therefore, as far as I
am concerned, may you live as long as a crow or stag,
feeding on empty air.
