"Gli epigrammi appartenenti al libro IX sono caratterizzati dalla personificazione di oggetti ( _res_ _loquentes_ ) o luoghi.\r\nNello specifico i tre epigrammi 9.40, 9.41 e 9.42 presentano la personificazione dello scudo, oggetto che anticamente, assieme ad ogni armatura intimoriva i nemici.\r\nDurante queste vere e proprie guerre psicologiche, i nemici terrorizzati dall’aspetto fermo degli avversari, dalle proprie armature lucide e dalle immagini scoraggianti riportate sugli scudi, si intimorivano ritirandosi dal campo di battaglia. [cfr. Hom., Il. XVIII]\r\nLo scudo è anche il protagonista di alcuni frammenti di Archiloco e Tirteo\r\nI primi due frammenti ( 1; 10 ) elogiano il valore e l’audacia nel combattere per la propria patria e per i propri figli, lasciando in secondo luogo il pensiero di salvare unicamente la propria vita.\r\nViceversa il frammento 5 è in opposizione ai primi due, in quanto Archiloco afferma che si debba abbandonare lo scudo pur di salvare la propria vita, azione che per i greci rappresentava la massima vergogna."
