Ἥφαιστός μ᾽ ἐτέλεσσε καμὼν χρόνον ἀλλὰ Κυθείρη
ἀνδρὸς ἑοῦ θαλάμων εἵλετο λαθριδίως,
Ἀγχίσῃ δ᾽ ἔπορεν κρυφίης μνημήιον εὐνῆς:
καὶ μ᾽ Ἀσκληπιάδης εὗρε παρ᾽ Αἰνεάδαις.

Hephaestus wrought me with long labour, but Cy-
therea took me secretly from her husband's chamber
and gave me to Anchises as a souvenir of their stolen
intercourse. Asclepiades found me among the de-
scendants of Aeneas.¹
