ὦ φίλος, εἰ σοφὸς εἶ, λάβε μ᾽ ἐς χέρας: εἰ δέ γε πάμπαν
νῆϊς ἔφυς Μουσέων, ῥῖψον ἃ μὴ νοέῃς.
εἰμὶ γὰρ οὐ πάντεσσι βατός: παῦροι δ᾽ ἀγάσαντο
Θουκυδίδην Ὀλόρου, Κεκροπίδην τὸ γένος.

hand ; but if thou art ignorant of the Muses, cast
away what thou canst not understand. I am not
accessible to all, but the few admire Thucydides,
son of Olorus, by birth an Athenian.
