μήτηρ υἷα λιπόντα μάχην μετὰ πότμον ἑταίρων
ἔκτανεν, ὠδίνων μνῆστιν ἀνηναμένη.
καὶ γὰρ γνήσιον αἷμα διακρίνει Λακεδαίμων
ἀλκῇ μαρναμένων, οὐ γενεῇ βρεφέων.

A mother, banishing the memory of her pangs,
killed her son who abandoned the field after the
death of his comrades. For Sparta distinguishes
purity of race by warriors' bravery, not by children's
birth.
