ἔργον ἀλιτρὸν ὄπωπα, κεχηνότα τύμβον, ὁδεύων
χρυσοῦ ταῦτα πέλει ἔργματα τοῦ δολίου:
εἰ μὲν χρυσὸν ἔχεις, εὗρες κακὸν εἰ δ᾽ ἄρα κεινὸς
ἔνθεν ἔβης, κενεὴν μήσαο δυσσεβίην.

As I journeyed I saw an impious thing, a gaping
tomb. This is the work of deceitful gold. If thou
didst find gold, thou hast acquired an evil, but if
thou wentest away empty thou hast got thee empty
impiety.
