ἰφθίμῳ τόδ᾽ ἐπ᾽ ἀνδρὶ φίλη πόλις ἤνυς1᾽ Ἀχαιῷ

γράμμα παρ᾽ εὐΰδρου νάμασιν Ἀσκανίης.
κλαῦσε δέ μιν Νίκαια: πατὴρ δ᾽ ἐπὶ οἱ Διομήδης
λάινον ὑψιφαῆ τόνδ᾽ ἀνέτεινε τάφον,
δύσμορος, αἰάζων ὀλοὸν κακόν. ἦ γὰρ ἐῴκει
υἱέα οἱ τίνειν ταῦτα κατοιχομένῳ.
En l'honneur du vaillant guerrier Achaios, sa cité a jugé bon de graver cette épitaphe près des flots d'Ascania aux belles eaux. Nicée l'a pleuré; et en son honneur son père Diomédès a élevé ce tombeau de pierre qui jette de haut son éclat, en gémissant, l'infortuné, sur son funeste malheur. C'était à son fils, en effet, de lui rendre ces honneurs-là qaund il partirait.

Nicaea wept for him, and his father Diomedes erected
to him this tall and glittering stone monument,
lamenting ; for it had been meeter for his son to pay
him these honours when he died himself.
