Θεσσαλὲ Πρωτεσίλαε, σὲ μὲν πολὺς ᾄσεται αἰὼν,
Τροίᾳ ὀφειλομένου πτώματος ἀρξάμενου:
σῆμα δέ τοι πτελέῃσι συνηρεφὲς ἀμφικομεῦσι
νύμφαι, ἀπεχθομένης Ἰλίου ἀντιπέρας:

δένδρα δὲ δυσμήνιτα, καὶ ἢν ποτὶ τεῖχος ἴδωσι
Τρώιον, αὐαλέαν φυχλλοχοεῦντι κόμην,
ὅσσος ἐν ἡρώεσσι τότ᾽ ἦν χόλος, εἰ μέρος ἀκμὴν
ἐχθρὸν ἐν ἀψύχοις σώζεται ἀκρεμόσιν ;

Protesilao di Tessaglia, cantato dagli evi sarai,
prima fatale vittima di Troia.
Prestano cure le Ninfe nell'ombra dei pioppi alla tomba
che in faccia ad Ilio detestata sorge.
Incollerite le piante, scorgendo le mura troiane,
rinsecchita dispiumano la chioma.
Quanta la collera fu negli eroi, se tuttora rimane
nei rami inanimati parte d'odio?

O Thessalian Protesilaus , long ages shall sing of
you , how you did strike the first blow in Troy ' s
predestined fall . The Nymphs tend and encircle
with overshadowing elms your tomb opposite hated
Ilion . Wrathful are the trees , and if they chance
to see the walls of Troy , they shed their withered
leaves . How bitter was the hatred of the heroes if
a part of their enmity lives yet in soulless branches .
