τὸν βίον ἦσθα κύων, Ἀντίσθενες, ὧδε πεφυκώς,
ὥστε δακεῖν κραδίην ῥήμασιν, οὐ στόμασιν.
ἀλλ᾽ ἔθανες φθισικός, τάχ᾽ ἐρεῖ τις ἴσως: τί δὲ τοῦτο;

πάντως εἰς ἀίδην δεῖ τιν᾽ ὁδηγὸν ἔχειν.

You were in your lifetime a Dog , Antisthenes ,
of such a nature that you bit the heart with words ,
not with your mouth . But someone perchance will
say you died of consumption . What does that
matter ? One must have someone to guide one to
Hades .
