ἤθελες ἀνθρώποισι λιπεῖν φάτιν, Ἡρακλείδη,
ὥς ῥα θανὼν ἐγένου ζωὸς ἅπασι δράκων
ἀλλὰ διεψεύσθης σεσοφισμένε: δὴ γὰρ ὁ μὲν θὴρ
ἦε δράκων, σὺ δὲ θήρ, οὐ σοφὸς ὢν, ἑάλως.

Questo volevi, Eraclide, che ognuno credesse: la tua
postuma metamorfosi in serpente.
Bella trovata! Fallita però: se la bestia era serpe,
bestia, non saggio, ti svelasti tu.

Heraclides , you wished to leave a report among
men that when you died you became a live serpent
in the eyes of all . But you were taken in , cunning
wise man , for the beast was indeed a serpent , but
you , being no wise man , were shown to be a beast .
