"text": "Plucking for thee flowers of Helicon and the first-born blooms of the famous Pierian forests, reaping the ears of a newer page, I have in my turn plaited a garland to be like that of Meleager. Thou knowest, excellent Camillus, the famous writers of old; learn to know the less abundant verses of our younger ones. Antipater will beautify the garland like an ear of corn, Crinagoras like a cluster of ivy-berries; Antiphilus shall shine like a bunch of grapes, Tullius like melilot and Philodemus like amaracus, Parmenion like myrtle and Antiphanes like a rose; Automedon is ivy, Zonas a lily, Bianor oak-leaves, Antigonus olive leaves, and Diodorus a violet. You may compare Evenus to a laurel, and many others whom I have inwoven to what freshly flowered blooms you like. ",

Indeed ye sit crammed with dainties, for many have served up to you a mixed feast of precious and varied discourse and persuade you to look with contempt on ordinary fare. What shall I do now? Shall I allow what I had prepared to lie uneaten and spoil, or shall I expose it in the middle of the market for sale to retail dealers at any price it will fetch? Indeed the rich gave me abundantly of their affluence, and accepting this I take quite sincere pride in their dainties. Ceux que je tenais maintenant tout préparés, dois-je comme cela les abandonner et les laisser perdre, ou bien les exposerai-je au beau milieu de la place publique, pour les céder à vil prix à des revendeurs ? Mais qui voudra goûter à mes produits ? qui consentirait à m’acheter mes écrits, fût-ce pour trois oboles, s’il n’avait vraiment les oreilles bouchées ?\n\nJ’ai pourtant l’espoir que, de bon cœur, vous prêterez la main à ce que je prépare et cela non sans quelque empressement ; car c’est mon habitude d’adapter le menu uniquement à l’appétit de ceux qui font appel à mes services ; en outre, ce banquet où chacun apporte sa contribution, me voici prêt à vous le servir avec des assaisonnements nouveaux. Car il n’est pas possible que de moi seul, citoyens, vous receviez une chère digne de vous ; j’ai donc engagé quelques collaborateurs à s’associer à ma besogne et à en partager les frais avec moi pour vous mieux traiter. Les riches ont fourni en abondance de ces mets dont ils se gorgent ; j’ai reçu d’eux leurs friandises et, véritablement, j’en tire vanité. Sur les cimes du Caucase et sur les récifs de Kyta, où sous l’airain sonore du pied des taureaux se fendit jadis la dure échine d’un sol de fer, les nymphes du Phase, formant des chœurs de danse avec les Hamadryades leurs compagnes, peuvent faire des rondes ou des bonds joyeux et chanter les exploits de notre Empereur qui réunit dans sa main plusieurs sceptres, en renonçant au pénible labeur de faire naître des géants. Qu’elles ne se vantent même plus d’avoir vu l’éperon d’Argo, le navire d’Iolcos ; car les champs de la Colchide, qui admirèrent les travaux du héros de Pagases, ne se couvrent plus d’une race de Géants et n’ouvrent plus leur glèbe belliqueuse à une moisson de vaillants guerriers. Ce prodige n’est qu’une invention de la légende, ou bien c’est par un sortilège impie qu’il fut accompli, lorsqu’une vierge artificieuse, en proie aux fureurs de l’amour, mit en œuvre toute la puissance des enchantements magiques ; mais sans qu’il fût besoin d’aucun maléfice ou d’un breuvage mystérieux, les géants de la Bactriane se sont écroulés sous nos coups. Il n’y a plus pour moi d’endroit inaccessible ; mais dans les flots du golfe d’Hyrcanie et jusque sur les abîmes de la mer d’Éthiopie, les navires italiens frappent de leurs rames une onde pacifique. \n\nAllons, réjouis-toi, voyageur ausonien : tu peux maintenant, sans escorte, visiter la terre entière ; parcours les gorges qu’habitent les Massagètes et les vallées inhospitalières de la Susiane ; foule de tes pieds le sol fertile de l’Inde ; en route, si tu as soif, puise à l’Hydaspe asservi. Oui, tu peux aussi t’en aller sans crainte par delà le couchant ténébreux, atteindre les colonnes d’Alcide et, en toute confiance, arrêter tes pas sur le rivage sablonneux de l’Ibérie, où par-dessus le détroit au beau cours, seuil de la mer, les pointes des deux continents viennent se rejoindre et éteignent dans le cœur des mortels l’espoir d’avancer plus loin. Pénètre au fin fond de la Lybie, chez les Nasamons ; côtoie aussi le rivage de la Syrte, où, refoulée par les ouragans du Sud vers les régions boréales, la mer divine ouvre aux hommes une voie terrestre même par-dessus le reflux sablonneux, au sein des brisants à fleur d’eau. Nulle part tu ne rencontreras, pour te recevoir, une région qui soit une terre étrangère : c’est dans les possessions de notre sage Empereur que tu te trouveras, partout où tu porteras tes pas ; car il encercle l’univers de sa domination : c’est en vain que le Tanaïs aura formé la frontière d’un continent, dans sa course errante à travers la Scythie jusqu’au Palus-Méotide. \n\nC’est pourquoi, maintenant que tout est plein de cette paix aimée, maintenant que tous les espoirs d’une guerre étrangère ou civile gisent brisés sous les pieds de notre Empereur, nous pouvons, divin Théodoros, instituer ici un savant concours et mettre en mouvement les jeux d’un chœur de poètes. Car c’est pour toi que j’ai affronté la lutte ; c’est pour toi que j’ai exercé le métier des moissonneurs et amassé, en réunissant tout dans un seul livre, ce butin d’une abeille qui puisait à toutes les sources. J’ai recueilli toutes ces fleurs éparses de l’élégie et j’ai tressé pour toi une guirlande faite des beaux vers de Calliope, comme on consacre un chêne aux fils de Cronos, des navires à Poséidon, un baudrier à Arès ou un carquois à Apollon, une lyre à Hermès et des vignes à Dionysos. Car je sais quelle gloire impérissable répandra sur le fruit de mes soins et de mes labeurs le nom de Théodoros. \n\nEn premier lieu, je cueillerai pour toi, rivalisant avec les anciens, tous les vers où les pères de la poésie nouvelle ont décrit des offrandes consacrées aux dieux d’autrefois ; car ils me paraissaient observer une savante imitation des lettres antiques. Puis, après ces pièces anciennes, un second livre rassemble toutes celles que nous avons composées sur des tableaux, sur quelque site, sur une statue habilement sculptée ou sur les œuvres innombrables de quelque autre art laborieux. Le troisième rang revient, dans ce nouvel ouvrage, à toutes les pièces qu’il est d’usage de graver sur les tombeaux : que Dieu veuille nous accorder de les obtenir dans la poésie et de chercher à les mériter dans notre vie. Tout ce que nous avons écrit sur les chemins divers de l’existence et sur la balance toujours chancelante d’une instable fortune, tu le verras dans le quatrième corps de bâtiment de mon ouvrage. Peut-être, ma foi, le cinquième exercice du concours te séduira-t-il par son charme : c’est celui où nos railleries mordantes font entendre leurs accents sarcastiques. La sixième partie, Cythérée s’en est emparée, détournant les pas de l’élégie vers les propos galants et tendres amours. Dans le septième recueil, enfin, tu trouveras les plaisirs de Bacchus, les chœurs amis du vin, l’ivresse, les coupes et les festins opulents. ",
