ἁ βάκχα Παρία μέν, ἐνεψύχωσε δ᾽ ὁ γλύπτας
τὸν λίθον ἀνθρῴσκει δ᾽ ὡς βρομιαζομένα.
ὦ Σκόπα, ἁ θεοποιὸς ἄπιστον ἐμήσατο τέχνα
θαῦμα, χιμαιροφόνον θυιάδα μαινομέναν.

The Bacchante is of Parian marble, but the sculptor
gave life to the stone, and she springs up as if in
Bacchic fury. Scopas, thy god-creating art has pro-
duced a great marvel, a Thyad, the frenzied slayer
of goats.
