Texts

— Paton edition

Piety built up this house from its foundations to its
lofty roof. For Macedonius did not build it out of
wealth gained by despoiling with the sword the pos-
sessions of others, nor did he weep, a pauper, over
an empty and profitless labour, deprived of the
return justly due to his outlay. As rest from labour
awaits the just, so may the works of pious men
survive.
