The tomb is that of Eusthenes the sophist, who was a reader of character, skilled in discovering our thought from our eyes. Well did his companions bury him, a stranger in a strange land, and among them was a poet marvellously dear to him. So the sophist although he was feeble, had those who took care that he should have on his death all proper honour.

C'est le monument d'Eusthénès : physiognomoniste, ce philosophe était habile à saisir d'après l’œil la pensée elle-même. Il a été enterré comme il convenait par ses compagnons, lui, étranger sur une terre étrangère, et par celui-là même qui compose ces vers, son grand ami. Tous les devoirs funèbres qui lui étaient dus, une fois mort, le philosophe, bien que sans ressources, a donc eu des gens pour les lui rendre.
