Ἕκτορι μὲν Τροίη συγκάτθανεν, οὐδ᾽ ἔτι χεῖρας
ἀντῆρεν Δαναῶν παισὶν ἐπερχομένοις:
Πέλλα δ᾽ Ἀλεξάνδρῳ συναπώλετο. πατρίδες ἆρα
ἀνδράσιν, οὐ πάτραις ἄνδρες ἀγαλλόμεθα.

Troia con Ettore morto perì, né l'assalto dei Greci
con altre braccia fronteggiò mai più.
Pella con Alessandro morì. Sono gli uomini, dunque,
gloria alla patria, non la patria agli uomini.
