Ἕκτορι μὲν Τροίη συγκάτθανεν, οὐδ᾽ ἔτι χεῖρας
ἀντῆρεν Δαναῶν παισὶν ἐπερχομένοις:
Πέλλα δ᾽ Ἀλεξάνδρῳ συναπώλετο. πατρίδες ἆρα
ἀνδράσιν, οὐ πάτραις ἄνδρες ἀγαλλόμεθα.

With Hector perished Troy and no longer raised
her hand to resist the attack of the Danai. And
Pella, too, perished with Alexander. So fatherlands
glory in men, their sons, not men in their fatherlands.
