μή με τάφῳ σύγκρινε τὸνἝκτορα, μηδ᾽ ἐπὶ τύμβῳ
μέτρει τὸν πάσης Ἑλλάδος ἀντίπαλον,
Ἰλιάς, τὐτὸς Ὅμηρος ἐμοὶ τάφος, Ἑλλάς, Ἀχαιοὶ
φεύγοντες — τούτοις πᾶσιν ἐχωννύμεθα:

[εἰ δ᾽ ὀλίγην ἀθρεῖς ἐπ᾽ ἐμοὶ κόνιν, οὐκ ἐμοὶ αἶσχος:
Ἑλλήνων ἐχθραῖς χερσὶν ἐχωννύμεθα.]

Ettore, non giudicarlo di qui, né la tomba misura
sia di chi combatté la Grecia intera.
Sono l'Iliade e Omero per me la tomba; la Grecia,
gli Argivi in fuga i miei seppellitori.

Do not judge Hector by his tomb or measure by
his barrow the adversary of all Hellas . The Iliad ,
Homer himself , Greece , the Achaeans in flight -
these are my tomb - by these all was my barrow
built . ( If the earth you see above me is little , it is
no disgrace to me , I was entombed by the hands of
my foes the Greeks . )
