πλουτεῖν φασί σε πάντες, ἐγὼ δέ σέ φημι πένεσθαι:

χρῆσις γὰρ πλούτου μάρτυς, Ἀπολλόφανες.
ἂν μετέχῃς αὐτῶν σύ, σὰ γίνεται; ἂν δὲ φυλάττῃς
κληρονόμοις, ἀπὸ νῦν γίνεται ἀλλότρια.
Tous disent que tu es riche, et moi j'affirme que tu es dans le dénuement. Car c'est l'usage qui témoigne de notre richesse. Ce dont tu jouis devient ta propriété; mais ce que tu conserves pour tes héritiers c'est, dès maintenant, le bien d'autrui!
