"text": "Goatherd, on turning the corner of that path\r\nwhere the oaks are, thou shalt find a newly carved\r\nimage made of a fig-bough, three forked, with the\r\nbark still on, without ears, but able with its genera-\r\ntive phallus to do the work of Aphrodite. Round it\r\nis a most holy hedge, and a perennial stream issuing\r\nfrom the rocks feeds on all sides abundance of laurel,\r\nmyrtle, and sweet-scented cypress, round which curl\r\nthe tendrils of the vine, mother of the grape. In\r\nspring the shrill song of the blackbirds echoes here\r\nwith its varied notes, and the brown nightingales\r\npour from their throats their honeyed voice in response.\r\nSit here and pray to kind Priapus to make me fall\r\nout of love with Daphnis, and sacrifice at once to\r\nhim a fine kid. But if he grants the prayer I will\r\noffer him in return three sacrifices. I will kill him\r\na heifer, a shaggy billy-goat, and the stalled lamb I\r\nhave. May the god be benevolent and grant it.",
