"text": "We Mortals of no account, even if we perform\r\ngreat deeds, do not survive long in the memory of\r\nanyone ; but as for the great, if they do nothing, if\r\nthey only breathe, as the Libyan said, it is engraved\r\nin adamant. For instance Zeno, the lord and emperor\r\nof our city, while in the middle of a game played\r\nwith the capricious dice, found himself in this com-\r\nplicated position : when of the white men who were\r\non their way back, the sixth line contained seven,\r\nthe ninth one, and the tenth and summus two each,\r\nwhile the line after the summus had two, and the last\r\npiece was on the divus. Black had two on the eighth\r\nline, and as many on the eleventh ; on the twelfth\r\nwere two, and one on the thirteenth. There were\r\ntwo on Antigonus and also on the fifteenth and\r\neighteenth, and the fourth line from the last (the\r\ntwentieth) also had two. It was the king's turn to\r\nplay for White, and not seeing the trap in store for\r\nhim, he cast the three dice from the wooden box\r\nwith its hidden ladder, and threw two, six, and five,\r\nso that at once he had eight single pieces in all\r\nwhich had formerly been next others (?). Avoid\r\nbackgammon,¹ as the king himself did not escape\r\nfrom its blind chance.",
