"text": "Thou knowest, Apollo, how I, Eunomus the Locrian,\r\nconquered Spartis, but I tell it for those who ask me.\r\nI was playing on the lyre an elaborate piece, and in\r\nthe middle of it my plectron loosened one chord,\r\nand when the time came to strike the note I was\r\nready to play, it did not convey the correct sound to\r\nthe ear. Then of its own accord a cicada perched\r\non the bridge of the lyre and supplied the deficiency\r\nof the harmony. I had struck six chords, and when\r\nI required the seventh I borrowed this cicada's voice ;\r\nfor the midday songster of the hillside adapted to\r\nmy performance that pastoral air of his, and when\r\nhe shrilled he combined with the lifeless chords to\r\nchange the value of the phrase. Therefore I owe a\r\ndebt of thanks to my partner in the duet, and wrought\r\nin bronze he sits on my lyre.",
