            "text": "À l'habile cithariste, au musicien Androtion, on posait des questions sur tel problème concernant la technique du plectre: «Lorsqu'avec le plectre on fait vibrer la plus haute corde, l'hypaté, la dernière à gauche se met à vibrer d'elle-même, en faisant entendre un léger son aigu; elle souffre en contre-coup une résonnance quand, uniquement, la haute corde est frappée. Je me demande donc avec étonnement comment des êtres inanimés, des cordes tendues, sont placées par la nature en de telles relations de sympathie réciproque.»\r\nAndrotion jura que le maître admirable du plectre, Aristoxène, ne connaissait pas le problème que nous considérions. Mais il répondit: «La solution est celle-ci. Toutes les cordes sont faites de boyaux de brebis que l'on fait sécher pêle-mêle. Pour cette raison, elles sont sœurs et, en conséquence de leurs affinités, elles résonnent en prenant leur part des sons qui une parenté les uns avec les autres. Car, en leur qualité d'enfants légitimes, — ne sont-elles pas toutes nées des mêmes entrailles? — elles héritent donc de sons qui provoquent ces résonnances. Il en est de même pour notre œil droit; quand il souffre, il communique souvent à l'œil gauche ses propres souffrances»."

            "text": "Some one questioned the musician Androtion, \r\nskilled in what concerns the lyre, on a curious piece \r\nof instrumental lore. \" When you set the highest \r\nstring on the right in motion with the plectron, the \r\nlowest on the left quivers of its own accord with a \r\nslight twang, and is made to whisper reciprocally \r\nwhen its own highest string is struck ; so that I \r\nmarvel how nature made sympathetic to each other \r\nlifeless strings in a state of tension.” But he swore \r\nthat Aristoxenus, with his admirable knowledge of \r\nplectra, did not know the theoretical explanation of \r\nthis. \"The solution,” he said, \"is as follows. The \r\nstrings are all made of sheep’s gut dried all together.\r\nSo they are sisters and sound together as if related, \r\nshaving each other’s family voice. For they are all \r\nlegitimate children, being the issue of one belly, \r\nand they inherit those reciprocal noises. Just so \r\ndoes the right eye, when injured, often convey its \r\nown pain to the left eye.”"
