Texts

χθὼν μυχάτων γυάλων κοιλώμασιν ἀέναον πῦρ
ἔστ᾽ ἂν ἔχῃ, φλοξὶν δὲ περιζείῃ κρυφίαισιν,
ἀτμὸς ἄνω βαίνων εἰς αἰθέρα θερμός, ἔνερθεν
θλιβόμενος, πυριθαλπὲς ἐπεύγεται ἰκμάσιν ὕδωρ.

While Earth in her inmost recesses has perpetual
fire and boils with hidden flames, the hot vapour,
ascending to the air owing to the pressure from
below, belches forth streams of water heated by fire.
