οὐδὲ τοσόνδ᾽ Ἀθάμας ἐπεμήνατο παιδὶ Λεάρχῳ,
ὅσσον ὁ Μηδείης θυμὸς ἐτεκνοφόνα,
ζῆλος ἐπεὶ μανίης μεῖζον κακὸν εἰ δὲ φονεύῃ
μήτηρ, ἐν τίνι νῦν πίστις ἔτ᾽ ἐστὶ τέκνων;

The fury of Athamas against his son Learchus¹ was
not so great as the wrath that made Medea plot her
children's death. For jealousy is a greater evil than
madness. If a mother kills, in whom are children
to place confidence?
